  4. AS IS and THE NORMAL HEART  Poignant, frequently funny, each of
  5. these plays depicted the impact of AIDS on a gay male couple and
  6. on the sexual revolution--the first with riotous nostalgia for
  7. decadence past, the second with righteous exhortations to gay
  8. monogamy or celibacy.

  10. BENEFACTORS  Friendship, architecture, imperialism and nosy
  11. neighbors wrapped up in a wry, rueful comedy of ideas.

  13. BIG RIVER  The unlikely but inspired blend of The Adventures of
  14. Huckleberry Finn and Composer-Lyricist Roger Miller's wistful
  15. echoes of the frontier era yielded a classic American musical
  16. with the decade's most fetching score.

  18. BILOXI BLUES  This worthy if lesser sequel to Neil Simon's
  19. autobiographical gem Brighton Beach Memoirs took the budding
  20. writer (Matthew Broderick) into basic training, where a fellow
  21. recruit (Barry Miller) denounced his detachment and awakened his
  22. conscience.

  24. THE BLOOD KNOT  Not just a confessional voice of white South
  25. Africa. Athol Fugard is the finest active playwright in the
  26. English-speaking world and, as he proved in this 25th
  27. anniversary revival of his first hit, a superb director and
  28. actor.

  30. THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO  Unfolding on catwalks and through
  31. trapdoors, shouted and spotlighted until a climatic finale
  32. whispered into near darkness, Peter Sellars' relentlessly
  33. feverish directorial debut at his American National Theater in
  34. Washington showed him at his energetic, idiosyncratic best.

  36. I'M NOT RAPPAPORT  Hilarious in its storytelling and blessed in
  37. its stars--Judd Hirsch and Cleavon Little as two octogenarian
  38. knights- errant--this sleeper from the Seattle Repertory Theater
  39. deserves its hit status on Broadway.

  41. A LIE OF THE MIND  Sam Shepard is America's leading playwright,
  42. and his newest and best work--naturalistic yet rich in symbol
  43. and poetry- -lifts him to the lyric level of Tennessee Williams.
  44. For both, home is where the heart aches.

  46. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM  Artistic Director Liviu Ciulei's
  47. version at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis was probably the
  48. best since Peter Brook's landmark 1970 production:  no dream,
  49. but a reasoned look at rim realities and revelatory nightmares
  50. in a war of the sexes.

  52. THE ODYSSEY  Staged for children with minimal yet spooky
  53. lighting and effects, this ensemble work by Seattle's A
  54. Contemporary Theater stirred adults too:  it richly evoked the
  55. awe and horror of Homer's epic.
